2012 Arrival For Nissan’s Stunning All-New Patrol SUV

by Brad Leach - 18/10/10
The Australian International Motor Show saw the first local appearance of the stunningly luxurious all-new Nissan Patrol.

Nissan says the new Patrol will be launched here sometime in 2012 – 14 years after the introduction if the current version.

Nissan displayed a range-topping, leather-equipped, left-hand drive, Middle-East grade Patrol in Sydney. According to Nissan insiders, this seven-seater is likely to be the Ti model in the Australian line-up.

The luxury features, quality, leather seats, beautiful colour palette, wood grain panelling, polished aluminium trim and standard equipment is akin to a Range Rover or a Lincoln Navigator– a massive shift from the first Nissan Patrols which debuted back in 1951. And its gargantuan 5,104mm length and 3,075mm wheelbase delivers massive amounts of legroom for second-row occupants and even those in the third row.

Under the bonnet, the jaw-dropping features of the all-new Nissan Patrol continue with a superb 5.6-litre petrol V8 engine (Nissan’s VK56VD engine) delivering 298kW at 5,800rpm and 550Nm at 4,000rpm. Drive is to all four wheels via a new seven-speed automatic transmission.

For those waiting for a diesel-powered Patrol, it’s a more confusing picture. The all-new model, primarily targeting the Middle East and North American markets, was not developed for either right-hand-drive or diesel engines. And while right-hand-drive development is on-track for a 2012 Australian arrival, the diesel engine has not been resolved.

Nissan Australia’s Managing Director and CEO, Dan Thompson says the company is researching suitable diesel engines from within Nissan, it’s alliance company Renault and even German giant Daimler - which has a technology agreement with Nissan. But when the all-new model arrives in 2012, it will be powered solely by the petrol V8 and the current diesel model will continue to be sold until the newcomer starts production.

Same for cab-chassis Patrol – the existing model will continue.

Underneath, the all-new Patrol provides a 140-litre fuel tank and sits on an all-new steel ladder-frame chassis with twice the lateral rigidity of the current model. And in a world-first, the all-new Nissan Patrol sits flat when cornering thanks to a hydraulic Body Motion Control System

(HBMC).

Suspension is a four-wheel double wishbone design and there are massive 358mm/350mm brake discs.

Safety technologies include a tyre pressure monitor, Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Cruise Control, Distance Control Assist, Forward Collision Warning System, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Intelligent Brake Assist, Traction Control, helical Brake Limited Slip Differential and a mechanical Differential lock.

There’s a hard-drive navigation system and the entertainment features include twin seven-inch TV monitors (in the rear of the front headrests), which can connect to DVDs, iPods and games.
