New version of Sync turns car into mobile wireless hotspot
A picture of a wireless broadband modem plugged into the Sync USB port. The next generation of Ford's Sync system will take the signal from a mobile broadband card and broadcast it throughout the car.
The next generation of Ford's Sync system will turn the car into a wireless connection hotspot.
The wireless Internet connection is active when a cellular wireless card, also known as an air card, is plugged into the car's USB port. The connection can than be accessed by wireless devices in the car, such as a laptop computer or a handheld device.
The connection is protected so that only approved devices can use the network. This blocks someone nearby the car from getting a free ride.
The use of Sync for wireless Internet is Ford's response to competitors that offer an add-on connection system, typically as a dealer-installed item.
The second generation of Sync, which Ford developed with Microsoft, goes on sale next year.
